LUMI user coffee break is coming!

Join us for the first LUMI user coffee break of the year on Wednesday, 29th of January, 2025, from 13:00 to 14:00 CET (14:00 to 15:00 EET). During this session Thomas Jakobsche (Uni Basel) will give a short presentation on application fingerprinting.

LUMI is collaborating with Prof. Florina Ciorba’s HPC group at the University of Basel on a research project contributing to Thomas Jakobsche’s PhD work on Monitoring and Operational Data Analytics (MODA). The project focuses on analyzing user workloads and improving resource efficiency in HPC systems.

Thomas Jakobsche is developing tools to record metadata from running applications, such as loaded modules and executed binaries. These tools aim to help the LUMI support team detect misconfigurations and inefficient resource usage, operating transparently with minimal performance impact. After internal testing, the tools are ready for broader user trials to confirm compatibility and better characterize real workloads. However, they currently do not support containerized applications.

Users can participate by loading a specific module and running their usual workflows. Participation can range from a few runs to extended use. Any issues, such as program compatibility or performance impacts, should be reported to the LUMI service desk with detailed descriptions.

To load the module on LUMI use:
module use /appl/local/csc/modulefiles/
module load siren

You can load the module either when submitting jobs or directly within a batch job, and both methods will achieve the same outcome. The module works by integrating a fingerprinting library into your applications during execution. Once the module is unloaded, the library is no longer added to any new runs.

We highly appreciate any runs you can perform with the module loaded, whether they involve simple single binaries or more complex workflows. For any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the LUMI service desk.
