Comprehensive general LUMI course

This four-day hybrid course (on-site in Warsaw and online) serves as a comprehensive introduction to the LUMI architecture and programming environment. It will include lessons on compiling and using software, programming models (HIP and OpenMP offload), porting, executing jobs, and optimizing applications to run on AMD MI250X. After completing the course, you will be able to work efficiently on both the CPU (LUMI-C) and the GPU partition (LUMI-G).

Please note that this is a comprehensive course with an emphasis on code development. LUST is also organizing recurring one-day introduction courses to LUMI. These courses cover the most important topics needed to install and use software on LUMI, as well as run jobs efficiently on LUMI-C and -G. The next course will be announced shortly. All courses assume some familiarity with HPC, for example, from courses organized by most local compute centers, and are designed to focus on LUMI-specific elements.

Event info

The course will be jointly conducted by the LUMI HPE Centre of Excellence (HPE CoE), AMD and the LUMI User Support Team (LUST).

The course is intended for users with ongoing projects on LUMI, users with project proposals in one of the national or EuroHPC channels, and support staff of local organizations of the LUMI consortium members.

This course is first and foremost an in-person event. All sessions will be broadcasted via Zoom, but direct interaction with the speakers is only possible in the lecture room. There will be an online document where others can leave questions, but questions from the audience in the lecture room take priority. Several staff members from HPE, AMD and LUST will be on-site, so this is the perfect moment for interaction with them.

If registrations exceed the number of planned participants, we will maintain a waiting list. The registration link can be found at the bottom of this page. The registration deadline is September 25, 2023, at 16:00 CET. As capacity is limited, participants who only intend to attend part of the course are kindly requested to leave their spot to others who wish to benefit from the entire course.

Both in-person and online attendance are free of charge. In-person participants will be provided with a sandwich lunch.

To participate in the hands-on exercises and access the slides and training materials on the course day, participants will need to join a course-specific training project. This project is managed by Puhuri, which means that CSC users will need to set up a new LUMI user account. Step-by-step instructions will be sent out after registration on how to join the project and set up an account if needed.

Day 2 – Wed 4.10. – Debugging, introduction to AMD ROCm and HIP, Slurm binding, additional software on LUMI.
Day 3 – Thu 5.10. – Profiling CPU and GPU applications.
Day 4 – Fri 6.10. – I/O, advanced ROCm tools, LUMI suport.

Please register for the course by September 25, 2023, at 16:00 CET. We reserve up to 40 in-person places for people traveling to Poland from abroad, and they will receive a quick confirmation on a first-come, first-served basis so that they can arrange travel. Other participants will receive confirmation shortly after the deadline. If your plans change, we kindly ask you to cancel your registration as soon as possible, ideally before the registration deadline. The email acknowledging your registration will contain a link to manage it.

Users who do not have an account on LUMI yet will receive temporary access for the purpose of the course. The allocated compute time should only be used for the course exercises. Any abuse will result in removal from the allocation for this and future courses.

Getting to Warsaw

• Arrive by plane – Okęcie Airport
  Warsaw Chopin Airport is the largest airport in Poland. It is located about 10 km from the city centre and well connected with other districts.Getting from the airport to IBBE PAS:
  • Public buses
    Line 175 goes to the city centre. A trip to the centre takes approximately 30 minutes (40 minutes during peak hours) and 20 minutes to the venue. Bus stops at the airport are located within the first ticket zone. The venue is located at walking distance from the “Uniwersytet Medyczny” bus stop. Lines 175 and 188 provide direct connection.
  • Taxis
    The airport authorizes and recommends the services of three corporations: Ele Sky Taxi, Super Taxi, Sawa Taxi (Uber services are also available in Warsaw).
  • Airport train
    There is an underground train station – Warsaw Chopin Airport. It is located on level -1, to the right of the new terminal arrivals. During peak hours, trains leave every 10–12 minutes, off-peak — every quarter. Getting from the airport to the Central Station (Warszawa Centralna) takes about 25 minutes.
• Arrive by plane – Modlin
  Airport Modlin airport handles charter and low cost airlines. The airport is about 35 km from the city centre. Small but functional terminal does not offer business clients services.
  There are no business lounges and boutiques nor air conditioning in the main hall. The railway link is the fastest and cheapest way to get to the airport. Public buses are also available – travel time is subject to traffic in Warsaw and can take an hour.
• Arriving by train – Central Railway Station
  If your hotel is in the centre, most likely you will end your trip at the Central Railway Station (Dworzec Centralny or Warszawa Centralna). Station platforms are located at -2, -1 levels with a maze of well indicated underground passages leading to the tram and bus stops. There are plenty of shops, cafés and a number of ticket offices on your way. The Main Hall — with ticket offices and waiting areas — is at level 0. Exit the Main Hall towards the Marriott hotel to the taxi stand, and in the direction of Golden Terraces Mall (Złote Tarasy) to get on a bus.

Public Transport in Warsaw

There are many ways to make your way around Warsaw: Taxis, Metro, trams and buses are the most common options.

Buses

There is a well developed bus system around the city. In rush hours there might be a lot of people on the buses, yet those are safe and punctual. As we have separate bus lanes in some places only, the buses can get stuck in traffic jams with other cars. There are few types of buses:

• black number — regular service — stops at all bus stops,
• red number — rapid service — stops at selected bus stops on the same regular routes,
• black square with white numbers that follow letter ‘N’ — night buses,
• express buses (E),
• suburban buses going to the other parts of the city (numbers 700–799).

Trams

The trams are in service between 5 am to 11 pm. The tram is the quickest means of transport during the rush hour because the majority of tram lines cannot be used by cars nor buses.

Subway / Underground (Metro)

Warsaw subway (Metro) is the fastest way to travel in Warsaw. The north–south M1 line connects Ursynów with Bielany, while new M2 line runs under Vistula River and connects Wola (Kasprzaka str.) with Praga Północ (Wileńska Railway Station). Metro connection hub is Świętokrzyska station.

Tickets

You can then use bus, tram, Metro and “S” trains — all with the same ticket. That is because time tickets allow for switching — within the purchased time — between all means of transport. When entering the Metro, you have to put the ticket onto the barrier window to open it. You can buy tickets on the bus and tram (head tramcar) using vending machine (accepts card payments only, issues already validated ticket) and stand-alone vending machines on some stops and around metro stations (tickets pucharsed there need to be valided). You can also use mobile app to purchase tickets, official “mobiWAWA” or others. Mobile tickets need to be valided usign QR code located in the bus, tram or train.

Taxis

Always use official taxi operators with official fares. Official taxi corporations have their logo and phone number on the taxi roof and the tariff on the passenger window. There must always be an official license visible inside the taxi. You can always call for a taxi or order it via “freenow” app, directly from your phone. Uber services are also available in Warsaw.

Car rentals

In Warsaw you will find all the recognised world rentals and many well organised and reliable Polish companies. You will find them at the airport and in the larger hotels.
